74th Infantry

74th Infantry, State Color. The 74th was composed of men from Philadelphia, Allegheny, Snyder counties, however men of German descent from Pittsburgh made up its majority. They were organized in September 1861 under former Prussian officer, Alexander von Schimmelfenning, as colonel. The regiment received their state color on March 5, 1862. Color-Sergeant George Eckert was cited for his bravery at Chancellorsville in preserving the state color from capture. The regiment was mustered out of service on August 29, 1865.
